Hey guys! How’s it going?
No workout recap for you today. I mean, I know work out Wednesday isn’t exactly a thing, but it could be! This morning though I wanted to chat about giving yourself a break. Cut yourself some slack, rest, and let your body and mind recuperate. Relaxing has been something I am trying to do more often. I am very go-go-go by nature. My day off doesn’t feel productive unless I’ve done one million things, and then I wonder why I feel less than rested the next day. I bring it upon myself, really. Often times I will overload my social calendar and take on way too many things, leaving myself feeling frazzled and burnt out. Pair that with working out 5-6 times per week, working full time, blogging 5 days per week (and everything that goes into that), PLUS everything else life throws your way… That is a recipe for craziness.
So, this year I am slowing down. Slowing way the heck down, especially in terms of working out. Yes, we all know exercise is one of those mandatory evils in life. Don’t get me wrong; I do enjoy running, lifting weights, doing yoga, and all that jazz. However, my goal is to be smarter when approaching my fitness schedule. A rest day is a true rest day – not a, “I’ll just run 5km REALLY easy” kind of rest day. Maybe I’ll talk the dog for a walk or do some super easy yoga (like savasana, also known as corpse pose when you just lay there – I am kidding, by the way), but for the most part I want to just RELAX. I used to get nervous when I decided to take rest days. “No, I can’t do that. I have to keep moving!” But since when is more better?
So, on Sunday we took it easy.
My family came over for brunch, and I took the day to rest. There was no running, no strength training, and no working out. Nadda, zip, zilch. We spent the afternoon wandering around Cowichan Bay with Nala, then picked up coffees and some goodies from their bakery. Pastries and not working out? I know. So sue me.
It was a great day filled with family and all things that make my heart and soul happy. Isn’t that what life is all about, anyway? Sometimes you really need to slow down in order to recognize the things that truly fuel your fire. For me, that is quality time with my family, writing, reading, spending time outside, being with Ryan & Nala, etc etc. Of course, exercising is part of my life as well, but it is not my WHOLE life.
I urge you all to slow down even if only for 15 minutes at some point today. Read an article, read a book, write a list of things that make you happy, go for a walk around the block, snuggle your dog or cat, listen to some music that you love – hell, dance around in your underwear if that makes you feel good! Taking a step back is so beneficial for your mental health and can give your body a much needed break, especially if you are the psycho-gotta-keep-moving type like me.
So, that’s all for today. I am off to pour a cup of coffee & get the day started. Hope you all have a great one! : ) Catch ya tomorrow.
