The Power of Positivity

Positivity: noun, plural positivities. 1. the state or character of being positive : a positivity that accepts the world as it is. 2. something positive.

Being positive is an ongoing process that, like anything, takes time. One thing that is important to know is that YOU have the ability to choose your mood each and every day. Sure, it is easy to look at things with a negative outlook, but there are so many benefits of being positive including lifting your own mood, self-motivation, self-confidence, and so much more.

So, what’s the big deal with positivity?

For me, being positive helps me deal with life’s curve balls with a more open mind. An example of this would be when I was asked at work to move into a new office. At first, my mind automatically put on the brakes. No, no, no. Nope, not happening. So, I wasted the weekend dwelling on the thought of this change, and made myself miserable thinking about the negatives. I made the mistake of not looking at the positives of the situation. Once I gave myself some time to reflect, I decided: how is this going to impact my life in the long term? To be honest, it is such a small change that I decided to stop wasting my energy on the thought and just DO IT with an open mind and see what happen. What’s the worst that could happen, anyway? I decide I don’t like it? No big deal.

I made the choice to change that NO to a YES and give it a shot. Why not!

And you know what? I love it. One thing that helped me was focusing my energy in a positive space now. The biggest thing you can do once you are faced with a hard decision or a stumbling block in your life is step back from the situation. Think: is this person angry at me, or the situation? What can I do to solve this and make things easier for myself? Often times, when you focus your mind on negative energy, everything in your life kind of tumbles down, too. While it can be more simple to just throw in the towel, keep your mind open and curious about what could happen if that shift was made to positive energy and the wonder of what comes along with that.

When a negative thought pops into my head, I acknowledge it, then roll my eyes inwardly. Negativity, who invited you? Not me. Don’t care. Moving on, positively.

You can apply positivity to any aspect of your life, too. It’s not just when you are confronted with a struggle, or when someone is really pushing your buttons. Think about all those times when you don’t want to go to the gym, don’t want to go to an event that you’ve committed to, or don’t want to clean your house.
Here’s a trick. Think of how good you will feel when you are done, or how showing up will help support a friend (whatever the case may be). This could be applied to anything in your life, too!
Find your WHY and just DO IT.
Yes, I understand this is easier said than done. In fact, I spent the whole week prior trying to wake up early and start my morning gym sessions sooner. However, my mind hadn’t shifted to that positive space yet, and I didn’t truly believe in my WHY, I suppose. Yeah, I’ll go after. Yeah, we’ll still have some time together in the evening. Oh yeah, we have puppy training class tonight… Oh, and this has come up.
You have to embrace your inner bad ass and push past those feelings. Then you will feel that positive change.
Something else that can truly help shift your mind into a more positive state is starting each day with a grateful heart. Life is busy, and during all the running around it can be easy to let the things we love and truly make us happy slip from our mind.
So, here’s 5 things that I am grateful for today:
1. My wonderful family (including my partner) who supports me with all of my crazy ideas
2. My dog, who has shown me that it is possible to find something to get excited about every day
3. Working out, to start my day off on an energized note and allowing me to release any stress
4. Curling up with a good book to unwind after a long day
5. Coffee, especially when enjoyed while reading or blogging
See. How AWESOME is it that we, as living, breathing, thinking humans, have the ability to change our outlook simply by looking inward? Not to get all woo-woo on you or anything (but it’s happening anyway), by simply being grateful for what we have in life can help put our mind in a positive space and change the tone of our whole day. This is pretty darn powerful to me – don’t you think?
There is something positive to be found in every day. I heard a quote once that was something like, if you think positive thoughts they will radiate through you and you will always look beautiful. It is so true! There is so much in life to smile about and be thankful for, so next time you feel that negative energy creeping in, give it a swift kick out of your way and carry on, positively.

5 Things Friday – Skincare & Moving Forward

Good morning, and welcome to another edition of 5 Things Friday!
I will keep this short and sweet and get right to the point. As always, let me know in the comments what you are loving this week.
Since fall is OFFICIALLY here, I can put pumpkin spice on everything and watch Halloween movies early. This also means that come November I can start watching Christmas movies, which is really what I am excited for. Any other fall lovers out there!?

So, I have been struggling with work outs this week. The last time I went to the gym was Monday – and what a productive day that was! – but since then I have found it so incredibly hard to roll out of bed early in the morning to hit the gym. On the same note, Nala’s puppy classes started on Wednesday, so our evenings were full after the work day was done. This quote is a favourite of mine this week because it gives me a reminder that it is up to ME to change this. I am the only one who can drag myself out of bed and get to the gym. I am the only one who can make myself go to the gym after the work day and get it done. I am the only one who will force me out of bed on a Sunday to do my long run. Life is all about choices, and from today on I choose to look ahead move forward positively.

Yep, still on that Harry Potter train.
I have been experimenting with adding a few extras into my skincare routine. Coconut oil and manuka honey are oldies but goodies, meaning they are old favourites that I love but have just started incorporating in my regime again. I will do a post on these separately in the future since there is so much to cover off when it comes to their benefits. Basically – there’s a ton and you should use them!
What are you loving this week? Any home remedy skincare tricks I should test out?
Happy Friday!

Beauty Tuesdays: A FALL HAUL!

On Friday Sarah & I headed to Nanaimo to do a bit of retail therapy. I know, I know. Wasn’t it just last week (again) that I was in Nanaimo? You see, this whole unemployment thing leaves me with a lot of time on my hands, and I also had some more Bath & Body Work coupons on my hands to use up. They were having a two day sale Friday/Saturday this past weekend, so I got a few more goodies in yummy fall scents to use up. I think I’m stocked now for the rest of the fall, but at the rate I burn through their candles, maybe not so much.
Anyway, I ended up saving quite a bit of money thanks to my thrifty shopping senses.
From Bath & Body Works:
Pumpkin Carrot Cake 3-Wick Candle
Sweater Weather 3-Wick Candle (note to the ladies: this smells the way a delicious chiseled man smells. Is that weird? That’s weird…)
Nail file
Vermont Honey Apple Lotion
Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin Lotion
Aspen Caramel Woods Lotion
And I was debating whether I wanted to purchase my Celestial moisturizer again, but I figured since I was already there and rather than buying something from the drugstore, why not?
Note: Let the Good Times Roll Facial Cleanser smells like Snickerdoodle cookie dough, I swear. I want to eat it! However, instead of devouring it I rub it on my face. I don’t suggest doing that with actual cookie dough 😉 I also received a sample of another cleanser that is safe to rub right on the eyes to remove any make up. This is a bonus for me, because often times I’ll go to bed without removing my mascara and wake up looking like a raccoon. Girl problems, right?

Sunday: 8 miles with 4 x .400mile hill repeats: The thing with this run is rather than doing several smaller hills, I opted for four bigger ones. This was a wise idea after strength training on Saturday (nawt). My calves are still sore.

Monday: Rest day. Oh, wait. I did 20 push ups. Biceps, where are you? Legs were still stiff from Sunday’s hills but feeling a lot better since I kept moving.

Today: Not sure yet! Maybe some cross training or a 5k run. We will see where the day takes me!

I am actually enjoying this taper right now. Over the weekend my brain was working overtime thinking about random stuff, but now I just want to hang out, relax, and let my legs recover for the race on Sunday. No hard runs this week, no big hills, no crazy speed sessions. Simply running to keep my legs happy and maybe some pick ups here and there so they don’t forget what turning over quickly is.

What did you do this past weekend?

Anyone racing this weekend?

My “Official” YouTube Debut!

Hey friends!
So, I made the jump to upload a real life video to YouTube! I say “real life” because although my channel has a few videos on there, they are just for fun and really have no purpose. This one, however, is a video about what’s in my gym bag (how typical of me), and I even took the time to add some music here and there on a video editing program I have on the computer. I have hummed and hawed about the idea of uploading videos on YouTube, but I figure there is no harm in trying! So, watch my awkwardness above (imagine how weird it is to talk to a screen – gotta get that down pat!) and PLEASE let me know if you have any videos you’d like to see in the future!
I had the laziest morning EVER. And I hate that feeling. I kept looking outside keeping tabs on the rain, then would go back to my laptop and peruse the internet some more. On the flip side, I did get lots of laundry and clean up done around the house, but that doesn’t count as anything FUN! So, after running a few errands, I went to visit my fam jam only to find they weren’t home. Well, good thing I have my running stuff with me at all times. I’m not even kidding. So, I took this opportunity to turn on The Food Network and watch Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, and run a couple of miles on the treadmill. Oh how I missed that treadmill — again, not kidding. I completed three miles. Hey, three is better than none! I thought about going for another run this evening since I am bored to death, but it is pouring rain and my brain is like, maybe you should foam roll and ice again instead. I have been feeling a bit of a pinch in my right knee, so it would obviously be smarter to stay inside and nurse that rather than run hard and risk injury, so. That is what I shall do.
And? No junk food today! Woohoo. Look at me go. I really want to get back to where I was a couple months ago with my clean eating and dedicated work out habits. This means lifting heavy things up and putting them down (strength training) and cross training too. Ugh, cross training. If I could just run forever without a day off and not get injured, the world would be a lovely place. Until that happens, I will stick to that tried and true routine and see even bigger gains!
Goals for the next week (so I can start July off on the right foot, prepping a week in advance):
– Eat clean
– Run smart (aka, don’t do two-a-day runs if my body says no)
– Foam roll
– Ice thy limbs
– No junk food
And there we have it! Seems like a doable check list. We shall put that to the test when I’m faced with temptations!
Hope you had a great weekend 🙂
